Gifts that Expand the Church

Church Planting

The ability that God gives to certain believers to start new churches, assume oversight for their development, and exercise leadership in spiritual matters in ways that are appreciated by those churches.

This is what you'd call a church planter. You can take risks and try new things. In the early Adventist Church, pastors were primarily church planters. There was no such thing as a settled pastor over a church. The church would primarily take care of itself and the pastor would go around and train people and start up new churches in different areas.

- Romans 15:20; Ephesians 4:11

Evangelism

The ability that God gives to certain believers to communicate the good news of Jesus Christ to unbelievers in such a way that they become His disciples. The ability to sense opportunities to share the Gospel and lead people to respond with faith.

People with this gift are sensitive about how the unchurched feel. They have a knack for turning conversations to a spiritual side. This gift can be used in many ways, for example, you may have the gift of evangelism, but be introverted, so this gift is going to show up in different ways compared to others. You have to learn to share the Gospel in a way consistent with your personality.

Acts 8:5, 6, 26-40; 14:21; Ephesians 4:11-14; 2 Timothy 4:5

Exorcism

The ability God gives to certain believers to detect and expel demons or evil spirits.

- Mark 5:1-15; Luke 10:17-20; Acts 8:5-8; 16:16-18

Missions

The ability that God gives to certain believers to adapt to a different culture in order to reach unbelievers and help believers from that culture. The ability to use your other spiritual gifts in a second culture.

The Apostle Paul had this gift. He said, "I've become all things to all people that I may save some. To the Jew, as a Jew, etc." If some people went to Japan and they had to eat the local food every day, they couldn’t do it! They just couldn't blend into the culture. However some people find the challenges of new cultures very exciting. You don’t have to go overseas to exercise this gift. In Australia there are people from every nation in the world waiting to hear the Gospel.

- Acts 8:4; 13:2-3; Romans 10:15; 1 Corinthians 9:19-23
